How we rate our herd:

Here at Brookefield we have always used EPDs to help influence breeding decisions, and will always use them as a guideline. In addition to EPDs we have developed our own rating system to score a cow's actual performance, so that every animal we sell can come with a fact card we can stand behind.
The most important quality in our females is what they do with their calves. Also, we have developed a 1-6 numerical rating for the following traits:

  1. We use progeny ratios for BW, WW, YW and ultrasound carcass traits

  2. Reproductive Soundness –
    1. will not conceive AI, needs to be bull bred
    2. occasionally takes AI, usually needs to be bull bred
    3. onceives AI but requires more than one service
    4. conceives AI at least 65% on the first service
    5. conceives AI first time, every time

  3. Economic Efficiency = maintainance x calf growth
    1. cow does not maintain, doesn’t nurse well, calf needs supplementation
    2. cow nurses well, loses condition, calf develops well
    3. cow maintains optimum body condition, while nursing optimum calf

  4. Pasture Temperment – (with calf at side)
    1. aggressive, high headed
    2. aggressive if someone between her and calf
    3. difficult to handle
    4. handles easily, calm temperment

  5. Chute Temperment – (ease of handling)
    1. excited, jumping, kicking, etc…
    2. nervous, may try turning or jumping
    3. nervous, runs out of chute
    4. mostly calm, maybe a bit stubborn
    5. calm, cooperative

  6. Maintainance/Fleshing Ability
    1. does not maintain easily, requires max input to flesh up
    2. may require a bit of extra care, does not maintain on pasture or hay alone
    3. maintains/gains weight and condition on pasture or hay
